Sophie Beresiner

Sophie Beresiner is an award-winning journalist based in London. Currently the Beauty Director of ELLE UK, she works across all platforms initiation and producing content for the ELLE website, print product and social channels. As well as her long-standing editorial career, consultancy projects and freelance styling and art direction, Sophie is passionate about her home and interiors, which led to the launch of her luxury candle brand, No22.

What is your personal style in 3 words?

Eclectic, Colourful, Joyful (my editor says ‘Jolly’!).

You work as the beauty Director for ELLE. Can you tell us a little bit about how that came to be?

I had a career change from TV post production in Bristol to move back in with my parents just outside   London to intern on magazines. I chose beauty because I love the packaging and playing and thought I was too subjective to do fashion. I got my first job assisting at ELLEgirl and came full circle to the mothership ten years later as Beauty Director.

And you’ve founded a luxury candle brand No. 22 – what was the drive behind that?

Honestly ‘drive’ isn’t quite as accurate as ‘accident’. I was making them as a calming hobby (I’m a craft geek) in my kitchen.  I wanted a candle that would look as amazing as it smelled, so I played around with clay and knit texture, gifted them to some friends who put them on Instagram and then Liberty noticed and asked me to come in for a meeting. Absolute dream come true. I still can’t believe it. They are professionally made now by the way!

What would you say has been your career highlight so far?

Definitely getting the job at ELLE. It was the job I always wanted and I didn't think I had a hope in hell of actually getting there. I have been a huge fan of the magazine for as long as I can remember and I absolutely still am.

Best style tip you've been given and ignored?

Don’t save anything for best. This is the very best tip for a shopaholic like me who has too many amazing pieces they’re saving to wear somewhere special. Just wear them and love them and don’t worry so much. I worry too much, after a red wine + neon green silk skirt incident! I’m still in mourning.

If you could have 1 hour in anyone's wardrobe - dead or alive - who would it be?

Definitely Elton John. That place would be like an incredible biopic museum. I’ve loved him since I was very young, maybe he subliminally influenced my ‘style in three words’ now that I think about it.

Last piece of clothing you gave away and why?

Do accessories count? My friend Christina came round and admired some two-tone sunglasses I’ve loved for ages but haven’t worn recently. I told her to keep them and now every time she wears them I remember how much I loved them! Damn.  If you could sum up Preen Line as a brand in a sentence, what would that go like?

Oh, this is difficult. It is like a unique a-lot-but-not-too-much expression of style that kind of takes the thinking out of getting dressed for anything.

What's next for Sophie Beresiner?

It’s a heavy one. I want to campaign for UK surrogacy law reform. Bit of a diversion from writing about lipstick, eh? But equally as important!

Finally, a question we ask all of our Preen Line Diaries girls: what are the top 3 tracks on your playlist right now?

Shallow by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper - obviously

For No One by the Beatles

Beyond by Leon Bridges
